SOURCES & METHODOLOGY

Understanding the map

Economic observations come from the World Bank World Development Indicators, downloaded October 24, 2026. Each year shows that year's observations only; missing values are gray. GDP is measured in current US dollars, so changes include inflation and exchange-rate effects.

Colors use fixed logarithmic thresholds to make countries of different sizes readable and allow comparisons between years. GDP per capita is average output per person, not personal income or a measure of inequality.

Country and territory shapes come from Natural Earth's 1:10m boundaries. Boundaries are geographic context and do not imply endorsement of territorial claims. Small countries have enlarged circular selection targets at their geographic location; overlapping targets can be separated by zooming or selected by search.
